Giving generously to those less fortunate

Since the lockdown, the Food for Life team has been making and distributing an average 4000 meals per day to local groups and organisations.

TO eradicate hunger and malnutrition in local communities. This is the mission of Food for Life Merebank chairman, Paul Pillay.

Since the lockdown the team has been making and distributing an average 4000 meals per day to local groups and organisations based in the Merebank, Wentworth, Bluff, Montclair, Clairwood Isipingo, Malukazi, Lamontville, Umlazi and Chatsworth areas, who ensure that meals reach those in need.

He is up by 3.30am to start preparing the hearty and nutritious meals before his team joins him an hour later. By 7am most of the food is done and ready to be packed before being picked up by volunteers from the various organisation supported by Food for Life. A team also goes out to do a feeding in Merebank as Paul gets ready to go to work.

Asked what keeps him going, he said: “I am surrounded by a beautiful team. When you do this work, the energy to keep going just comes naturally. I am beyond passionate about this, it’s what drives me. Knowing that someone is going to be helped from what we do makes it worthwhile,” said Paul, who has been running the organisation for over four years now.

Food for Life Merebank chairman, Paul Pillay prepares a delicious curry before it packed and delivered to help feed those in need.
The organisation is part of Food for Life South Africa which sees volunteers serving lunch meals to thousands of families throughout the country. “We are an NPO and survive solely on donations which have dried up by a considerable amount. On Monday, 11 May, instead of cooking for 4000 we had to cook for only 250 people for the first time during the lockdown period. But things have picked up a bit again since then. If it’s possible we would like to run till the end of lockdown and keep all areas we feed healthy with a nutritional meal,” he said.

Food for Life Merebank extends a heartfelt thanks to all of its sponsors, organisations and ward councillors throughout the South Durban areas who have been actively involved in donating ingredients, collecting, distributing and helping deliver meals on a daily basis. “It is your continued support and contributions that help us carry out our mission to eradicate hunger,” thanked Paul. The organisation appeals to the greater public to assist with donations of vegetables and rice.
