Mass military Covid-19 testing begins in Bluff
Testing, supported by the Department of Health, commenced for the unit members of the Department of Defence (DoD).
ARMY Support Base KZN on the Bluff kicked off its mass Covid-19 screening and testing on Monday, 18 May.
Testing, supported by the Department of Health, commenced for the unit members of the Department of Defence (DoD). This is a continuous internal initiative to ensure soldiers and others wearing uniforms are not themselves infected and thus carriers, who can pass on the virus during execution of their duties. About 100 members went through the necessary registration, screening and testing as required by the health department.
“Testing is crucial during this time. As essential workers we go out into various Covid-19 hotspots so we need to be healthy. This way we can therefore continue to be the commanders of Covid-19 testing, while ensuring that we have enough manpower to carry out our public duty. If these guys are down, then who is going to enforce the lockdown and assist? We need to be very careful that we are sending out people who are fit to do the job, not people who will harm others with the virus,” said Candidate Officer Menzi Cele.
Coordinating the mass project was SO2 Nursing Major Nomusa Nhlumayo, who assured that the DoD health team had started preparations in advance and were well equipped with all the required PPE (personal protective gear). “We started with our members who are on the forefront such as healthcare workers and those members that are going out of our unit to patrol and assist police and other essential services.”
