Keonte’ is a community leader in the making
The 13-year-old holds an admirable ambition to help and uplift those in her community in any way that she can.
DYNAMITE comes in small packages and young Keonte Basson of Wentworth is living proof that.
The 13-year-old holds an admirable ambition to help and uplift those in her community in any way that she can. She is the director of the Ogle Road Storytelling Space, which is a unique educational and empowering space for children and young teens. Here, she guides and instructs the younger children on how to behave as well as leads their regular youth meetings. “I love coming together with all the children and my friends. At the storytelling space, we have fellowship together, play, do activities together and share each other’s talents with one another. This has inspired a lot of positivity among each other in our community instead of being caught up in wrong things. This is a very lovely space for children and I encourage all of them in the area to be a part of this project,” said Keonte who particularly enjoys singing around the bonfire.
The Grade 7 Assegai Primary School learner has made helping others her personal responsibility and is also very hands on in the local feeding scheme founded by community leader, Esmeen Usher.
“Keonte’ is very responsible and has shown very good leadership skills. She has demonstrated a beautiful passion for people. Her mother works at St Monica’s Children’s Home and I think she has inherited that love to help others from her. Keonte’ is here every day and makes sure that the van is clean and sanitised, that the children get their porridge in the morning and lunch in the afternoon. Her involvement in the community is teaching her humanity and humility at such a young age,” said a proud Esmeen.
