Virtual Comrades Marathon runners to endure 90km for charity
"A lot of people are going through a hard time with Covid-19, so we wanted to put ourselves through a hard time and in doing that, raise money for the people who need it most."
IN the true sense of camaraderie, four members of the Bluff Athletics Club will run the virtual Comrades Marathon, Race the Comrades Legends, to raise funds for charity.
Wesley Hawkey, Romondo Thompson, Robert Lagane and Johnathan Heslop hope for clear skies and support from the Bluff community on Sunday, 14 June, as they tackle the grueling 90km race in service to those with less in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
“We’re going to run as fast as the slowest man because we are running together and this is a different experience for us because none of us has done this before. We’ve done the Comrades, but not like this. It might also be a first for the Bluff as well, we don’t think anybody has ever ran 90km on one go before,” the group said.
They said they see the race as challenging themselves while inspiring the youth to follow suit.
“A lot of people are going through a hard time with Covid-19, so we wanted to put ourselves through a hard time and in doing that, raise money for the people who need it most. The good thing is that there’s a lot of people that have now come on board in the sense that you would get random people just sending messages saying they want to support us. It’s basically like a Bluff Comrades Marathon,” they said.
The physical start and finish of the race will be at Fynnland Sports Club. The route will be circulated five times to make the distance and will pass Engen Refinery on Tara Road, Duranta Road, the Mondi Paper Mill, Merewent, Cuttings, Marine Drive, Foreshore, Ansteys, and the army base.

For support, the team encourages residents to join them on the route for a kilometre or two, provided safety precautions are adhered to. Or be water ready with a hosepipe in hand to cool the runners down, hoot or shout words of encouragement to keep them going.
Alternatively, you can make a monetary contribution to a trust set up by McNaught and Company for the fundraiser to Standard Bank account number 251282473, branch code 051001 and use any one of the runners’ names as a reference.
