Councillors join forces to address refuse collection delays

The consistent breakdown of refuse trucks, officials downing tools and other internal staffing issues at the Collingwood DSW depot, have severely affected local communities.

“THE consistent delays in the collection of refuse bags and the poor service provided by the Collingwood DSW depot must urgently be addressed.”

This is a stern word from ward 66 councillor JP Prinsloo who shared that over the past several months, communities serviced by the Collingwood DSW depot have experience numerous delays in the collection of refuse bags.

“The consistent breakdown of refuse trucks, officials downing tools and other internal staffing issues have been identified as the root causes of these delays by officials. With refuse removal tariffs set to increase by 6.9% during the 2020/2021 financial year, this depot will have to seriously deal with its current challenges in order to justify this increase. The City can not expect residents to keep paying more for a service that they barely receive,” he said.

In efforts to address this issue swiftly and effectively, 10 DA councillors, who’s wards are serviced by the depot have requested an urgent meeting with Senior DSW Management, including the head of the department and the deputy city manager for the cluster.

“All the issues and challenges facing this depot will be discussed to ensure that services in the future will no longer be affected. Residents can support our efforts by writing directly to DSW to raise their dissatisfaction with the current services they receive by sending an email to dsw@durban.gov.za or contact helpline 031 311 8804. Uncollected refuse bags can be reported to the same email and contact number,” concluded Prinsloo.

DSW Management could not be reached for comment by the time of going to print.
