There is no stopping YWPPS’ Andiswa
Yellowwood Park Primary School (YWPPS) Grade 7 learner, Andiswa Buthelezi knows that she needs to be both, a good leader and a team player when out on the field or on the court.
WHETHER it’s chomping the hockey ball or holding up a mean defence on the netball court, Yellowwood Park Primary School (YWPPS) Grade 7 learner, Andiswa Buthelezi is impressively skilled at both.
She is her school’s hockey and netball captain and plays the centre forward and wing defence positions, respectively. Her main sports highlight for the year has been making the South Durban Hockey team, after successfully making the cut at the trials held at Montclair Senior Primary in March. “It was a very nerve wrecking experience and I really didn’t think that I could make it because I was made to play a position that I had never played before. I was really surprised by how well I played and ultimately making the team,” she said.

Asked which of the two sports she would choose if she had to pick one, the talented player said she would have to go with netball. “I enjoy playing netball more because in order to make the right move you have to be patient and in life, in order to succeed you have to make the right decisions and to do that you need patience,” she said, adding that she has considered going pro and can’t wait for the Netball World Cup in 2023 which will be hosted in Cape Town and hopes to witness professional netball players live in action.

This rising star knows that she needs to be both a good leader and team player when out on the field or on the court. “Being a good team player is not about being the best player on the team but it’s about trying your best and never giving up. Being kind to the other players and motivating them to also never give up.”
Her biggest supporter is her coach, who she said saw something special in her. “Coach du Toit has never given up on me since day one. I’m where I am today because of her. Nothing in this world is equal to the love and support she has shown me.”

“Andiswa has really blossomed this year. She tried netball for the first time in term four last year and she has really grown. She has also really grown in hockey. At the South Durban Hockey team trials, the selectors were blown away by her. She has really grown as a person and takes control at practice, enforces discipline when needed and she assists me when needed. Most times I don’t have to ask her to do something, she takes the initiative. On top of that, she is always in the top 10 for academics and has received academic badges,” said YWPPS sports coach, Simone du Toit.

Andiswa not only has the makings of a sports star but also shines in the classroom, achieving excellent results in her academics. “When I grow up I want to be a neurosurgeon because the human mind really fascinates me and because in South Africa, we don’t get a lot of people who want to pursue that profession. My biggest role model is my father because he always motivates me and tells me to keep trying my best in all I do. Whenever I fail, he has taught me to always ask myself whether I tried my best and if not, that I should try again.”
When she isn’t in her sports kit, she enjoys trying new things everyday, cooking for her family is her favourite hobby.
