Talented soccer player shines on the field

The 31-year-old has played for numerous teams in his lifetime and the one skill that truly sets him apart from other players on the field, is his impressive speed.

YELLOWWOOD Park Football Club (YWP FC) winger, Mangaliso Mhlongo is quick on his feet and possesses an undeniable talent.

The 31-year-old has played for numerous teams in his lifetime and the one skill that truly sets him apart from other players on the field, is his impressive speed. “For every team that I have played for since 2008, I have always been the fastest player. To be honest I haven’t played in a team or against another player who faster than me.”

He started playing soccer at the age of eight when would enjoy playing township street soccer with his childhood friends. The player was soon spotted and advised to take his game a step further by playing field soccer, where he realised his talent.

One of his main achievements was being afforded the opportunity to play for the University of Pretoria’s first team for two full seasons before suffering a serious injury. He moved back to Durban and pursued other interests while he recovered.

I love how soccer brings people together and how it is a language on its own. Even if you don’t know someone, by simply playing with them, there is a shared understanding which leads to a special brotherhood.

“The one thing that I would say I don’t like about the sport is the injuries. I had an injury and it ended my hopes for a soccer career,” said Mangaliso who once had dreams of going pro. Today, he mainly plays to keep fit and also coaches the U16 New Forest High School soccer team, where he is also a teacher.

He still hopes that the soccer season will continue as lockdown restrictions are slowly eased, where he will represent YWP FC in the much anticipated league tournaments planned for the year.

The Orlando Pirates and Liverpool supporter is also a well-known stand-up comedian who has won over the hearts and humour of his community. He hosts comedy nights every month at the YWP Sports Club where he entertains crowds and offers other promising individuals a platform to showcase their talents.
