Montclair crime round-up
Captain Derek Vijiam, spokesperson for Montclair SAPS provides the latest briefs of crime in the area ranging from Saturday, 20 June to Monday, 22 June.
A WOMAN was arrested on Friday, 19 June after placing three tins of baby milk formula in her trolley and casually walking past the till point at a beauty and cosmetics store in Montclair Mall.
According to police, the incident took place at about 8.45am at Clicks, where the complainant, a security employee, who was performing his tasks, observed the accused.
“These were not put into any shopping bags. Once outside the store the accused was confronted and requested to show her proof of payment. Since she did not have the necessary documentation nor explanation, she was taken into the store for questioning. The baby formula was confirmed to be the property of the store. SAPS was called in and she was charged,” said Captain Derek Vijiam of Montclair police.
Carjacking
AN e-hailing taxi driver received a call to fetch commuters from Alphen Avenue in Woodlands, Montclair on Saturday, 20 June at about 6.05am. On his arrival, he was greeted by two men who got into the car and as he was driving, he was told to stop along the road.
“This is when they produced two firearms and threatened him. He was physically pushed into the rear of the vehicle and forced to lay down. They drove off and while moving, one of the hijackers fired a shot, which hit the driver on his head. The suspects slowed the vehicle and pushed him out onto the road. The victim was taken to King Edward VIII Hospital to treat his open wound at the rear of his head,” said Captain Vijiam.
Robbery
A WOMAN walking alone along Pinedene Road, Rossburgh, was startled when she was accosted by an unknown man from behind on Saturday, 20 June at about 6.30am.
“He grabbed her vigorously, which caused her to fall to the ground and demanded her belongings by physically keeping her down. He grabbed her handbag which contained a cell phone, personal documents and cash. The assailant kicked her while on the ground and ran away towards the M7 freeway,” said Captain Vijiam.
Theft by false pretence
A WOMAN lost her handbag with personal belongings after being misled about a bargain hunt at Montclair Mall on Wood Road, Montclair on Saturday, 20 June at about 1.30pm. She was informed by another woman that she could arrange items for sale at discounted prices as she knew the manager.
“She was further introduced to another woman in the parking lot and was told to leave her bags in the car with the other lady as she was not allowed to take it inside the store’s stockroom. While on her way, the victim’s suspicion was aroused and she immediately went back to the car. She could not find the other lady with the bag,” said Captain Vijiam.
The bag contained cash, cell phone and other personal documents. Both suspects are unknown. Residents are warned not to be gullible and trusting when meeting anybody, especially someone they don’t know as consequences could be far-reaching.
Business robbery
A SHOPKEEPER was busy in his shop on South Coast Road in Clairwood, with other employees when four men walked in on Saturday, 20 June at about 3.30pm.
“One asked for a USB which was handed to him and then drew his firearm and cocked it, pointing it towards the victim. The victim was forced to the rear storeroom and tied with cables. Other employees were also placed in the storeroom. The suspects removed a car battery, radio generator and cash. They ran towards Sirdar Road and got into a vehicle in which they made their getaway,” said Captain Vijiam.
Drugs
THE Montclair crime prevention unit was patrolling in a marked police vehicle on Sigamoney Road in Clairwood, when they came across a suspicious-looking man on Saturday at about 9.20am.
“The suspect, who was with a group of men, behaved suspiciously and was searched and found to be in possession of 12 heroin capsules in his pocket. He was brought to the station and charged. A 36-year-old man, Christian Soko, was charged and appeared in Wentworth Court on Monday, 22 June,” Captain Vijiam said.
