You can still do good this Mandela Day, says Tafta

Despite the difficult challenges caused by Covid-19, You can still do good this Mandela Day.

MANDELA Day will be very different this year. But, despite the circumstances, we must continue with the vision of our former leader and do what we can to improve the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves.

Sadly, The Association for the Aged  (Tafta)  is unable to welcome volunteers into their Homes as they have in previous years. “It is a sombre reminder of how the Covid-19 has affected our lives, in particular, the lives of our elderly, who are not only at greater risk, but also more susceptible to loneliness. So we invite you to shower our elderly with special care kits that will go a long way in helping them deal with the physical, emotional and social distress of Covid-19,” said Tafta CEO, Femada Shamam.

Whether you are an individual looking for something rewarding to do for someone in need, a business person looking for a community team-building project for your staff, or a manufacturer/retailer willing to donate useful items – please reach out to Durban elders in one of the following ways:

  • Covid-19 Care Kit: Help us provide care to elders who’ve tested positive for the disease, by donating items essential for daily care: disposable gowns, shoe covers, gloves, vehicle disinfectant, pulse oximeter, surface sanitizers, hand sanitizers, tidy hand towels, disposable gloves, KN 95 masks, disposable food containers and cutlery.
  • Self Care Kit: Help improve the holistic wellbeing of an elder through essential self-care items including toilet paper, tooth paste, tooth brush, bath soap/body wash, roll on and shaving cream.
  • Nourishment Kit: Help our elderly receive their three daily meals in the comfort of their homes by donating non-perishable foods such as canned food, oil, pulses, flour, tea, coffee and long life milk.
  • Health Care Kit: Donate essential items like adult nappies, sanitary pads, cotton balls, sugar strips, cholesterol strips, band aids, gauze squares 100×100 and 50×50, Savlon/ Dettol, and syringes in sizes 2ml, 5ml, 10ml and 20ml.
  • Maintenance Care Kit: Help us continue providing safe, secure and enabling environments across our 13 homes through daily upkeep of our buildings. Items needed include: toolboxes, paint, paint brushes and rollers, thinners, energy saving globes 40W, tap washers, hoists, generators, safety films for windows, floor and wall tiles and blinds.
  • Recreational Kit: Help stimulate mental and physical wellbeing of our elders through repairs to our aviary, recliners for our serendipity ward, gazebos, park benches, gardening, sewing, knitting, beauty care products, TV, sound system and art kits.
  • Community Care Kit: Help us continue to feed elderly in the community by donating reusable or disposable food containers, plastic cutlery and cooler boxes.

“Because we have a strong COVID-19 prevention strategy and your health and safety is also of concern, please consider making a cash donation online rather than dropping off items, and we will assemble these kits on your behalf,” said Shamam.

Your gift of any amount – made online right now – will go towards improving the lives of the elders in our care. They are feeling especially lonely and scared at this time. Your kit will remind them that others do care, and have their wellbeing at heart.
