Bowling Club members delighted at greens reopen

The annual men and women's bowls tournament for the local club, the Dan Draper, in its 72nd year in July, had to be cancelled due to the lockdown.

AS RESTRICTIONS and bans are slowly being lifted, so too were the spirits of the members of the Durban Wanderers Bowling Club as they returned to the greens. Although bowling was prohibited, the club was still able to be used for the greater good of the community.

“We initiated a campaign to supply food to the needy via Samantha’s Kitchen. She along with various helpers and assisted by the bowls’ vice president Richard Hendicott and councillor Gavin Hegter, provided much-needed services to the needy around the area.”

“A special thanks to those who donated time, effort, products and funds towards the effort must be extended, said club member,” Jeff Bolt.

He said other unintended consequences they faced because of lockdown were that some of their staff and management members were without work over this extended period, with many challenges around the UIF/ TERS system, of which some are still awaiting much-needed remuneration.

The annual men and women’s bowls tournament, the Dan Draper, in its 72nd year in July, also had to be cancelled.

“With the Covid-19 pandemic restricting the playing of bowls over past few months, it has been good to see some of the members back on the bowling greens.

“The Port Natal Leagues and competitions are still postponed until further notice, however, Saturday, 1 August, saw a fair turnout for tabs-in,”

He said members are encouraged to let the scribe know if they will be joining so that the relevant rinks can be reserved.

“Stalwarts Peter Prenger and Eric Swanson would love to see more members on the greens to show them some tricks they may already have forgotten. Over the past few weekends, the Sunday ‘pre-drawn’ pairs squad had been steadily increasing with 10 teams taking to the greens this weekend.”

“Two games of 10 ends were enjoyed by all. Club members are reminded that their section and main club fees are due, please make an effort to pay these soon,” he said.

Jeff said the Friday meat, snowball and Lotto draws have been postponed indefinitely until further notice.

“The essence of a sporting or social club is to allow people from all works of life to congregate and appreciate what life has to offer such as being social or competitive, participating in some sort of activity to keep the body, mind and soul active.”

“Many of our members can’t do this at the moment as the Covid-19 pandemic either prevents them from taking part, or restricts them due to the protocols needed to be put in place. Be safe over this period, we will get through it. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to those members and friends on the recovery list, get well soon fellow Wanderers,” said Jeff.
