Men nabbed with drugs and copper cables valued over R1.6m

The drugs have an estimated street value of more than R200 000 while the copper cables were valued over R1.6 million.

TWO MEN were arrested in Wentworth and Montclair for being in possession of 1000 drug capsules and a gun with live rounds, copper cables valued over R1.6 million and rounds of ammunition respectively on Sunday, 9 August.

The 26-year-old man’s arrest on Silvertree Road was part of an operation aimed at curbing criminal activities and arresting wanted criminals. The operation included officers from the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation, Provincial Trio Task Team, and other security agencies.

“The suspect was found with 1 000 capsules of heroin and 28 mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of more than R200 000,” said provincial spokesperson for police, Colonel Thembeka Mbele.

“A revolver with 49 rounds of ammunition was also seized from the suspect. Investigations revealed that the firearm was stolen from Gingindlovu in 2001. The suspect was taken to Wentworth police station for detention. He was charged for dealing in drugs and illegal possession of a firearm as well as ammunition,” added Colonel Mbele.

The operation also led the officers to Fairbridge Road in Montclair, where a 35-year-old man was found with copper cables valued at over R1.6 million and 18 rounds of ammunition. He was arrested and taken to Montclair police station for processing.

“He was charged for possession of suspected stolen property and illegal possession of ammunition. The copper cables were positively identified by Telkom,” she said.

The provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Khombinkosi Jula commended the police officers on the arrests.

Both men appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 11 August.
