New NPO establishes ties in the community
After observing all Covid-19 safety protocols, members of the Food Circle Organisation were welcomed into The Elder's Voice retirement home.
THE newly launched Food Circle Organisation is a pro-women movement that seeks to empower and give back to local women.
The Montclair-based non-profit organisation (NPO) recently visited The Elder’s Voice KZN on Kenyon Howden Road to lend a helping hand at the home. Ward 64 councillor Gavin Hegter popped in to show the group his support.
“We visited the home to celebrate Women’s Month because we are an NPO for the community and we felt we needed to do something by paying a visit to clean, cook and donate. We are a mixture of young and mature women who value the elderly in society,” said the organisation’s founder, Nonhlanhla Ntombela.
After observing all Covid-19 safety protocols, the team was welcomed by home’s founder, Joanne Herbst, who was delighted to host them.
“It was awesome that they came around and helped us with some dishes. They brought in vegetables and spent some time with old people. It was lovely to have them there. It was nice to interact with another organisation within the area that we didn’t even know existed and we hope to do something with them again,” she said.
“Our slogan is Women at Work 365 Days 24/7. We are involved in small scale farming where we plant vegetables and supply families who are in need with fresh vegetables. While this helps out in our plight, we are still in need of more items to donate to meet demands – these include fruits, face cloths, hand sanitisers and masks,” Nonhlanhla said.
The team is enthusiastic about their next visit in the near future. They are also already planning a Christmas lunch at the end of the year for needy families and elderly people and appeal for donations. These could be in the form of second-hand clothes in good condition, stationery and toys.
“We will have community events in October but they will be strictly by invite due the Covid-19 restrictions. Thank you to Joanne, Barbara and their staff members for allowing us to visit,” she added.
