Learners impersonate favourite book characters for Literacy Week
Bluff Christian Academy extended its programme a week-long with various themes daily.
INTERNATIONAL Literacy Day is observed annually around the world to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).
The day was globally celebrated on Tuesday, 8 September, and Bluff Christian Academy extended its programme a week-long with various themes daily.
“On Tuesday we had donate a book, the Grade 10s brought in over 150 books, which was amazing, Wednesday, 9 September we had a book fair. A company that sells books came over at the school and they converted one of our classrooms into a library.”
“The children were able to buy books. On Thursday, the first thing in the morning, we had read-a-thon, the whole school took about 30 to 40 minutes to read anything of their choice. The school was dead quiet and it was lovely to see all the learners at their desks reading,” said the school’s marketer, Michelle Ann Killian.
The festivities ended on Friday, 11 September, where learners were encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character.
