Two men due in court for Montclair carjacking

The carjackers drove off with the driver and while they were driving along Alamein Road, police noticed the suspicious car.

TWO men are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 21 September for carjacking and the possession of an unlicensed firearm with 11 rounds of ammunition.

The men held a driver of an e-hailing service at gunpoint in Montclair on Friday night, 18 September at 8.25pm.

“An e-hailing service driver received a request to transport a client from Umbilo to Montclair. Upon his arrival in Umbilo, two unknown men got inside the vehicle and asked to be dropped off in Montclair. One suspect sat at the front and the other at the rear passenger seat,” said KZN police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala.

“On their arrival in Montclair, Strydom Place, when they were about to jump off, the suspect seated at the back pulled out the firearm and instructed the driver to lie down between the seats,” said Captain Gwala.

The men drove off with the driver and while they were driving along Alamein Road, police noticed the suspicious car which they then stopped.

A search was conducted and one of the men was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with 11 rounds of ammunition.

“Both suspects, aged 21 and 27, were placed under arrest for charges of carjacking, possession of illegal firearm and ammunition. They are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday,” added Captain Gwala.

The acting provincial commissioner, Major-General Thulani Gonya, commended the police officers for the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of the firearm.
