WATCH: Nursing students tackle drug abuse in Austerville
The second year UKZN bachelor of nursing students selected the community of Austerville as part of their community nursing module.
LEARNERS at Fairvale Secondary School were taught about the dangers of drug consumption by nursing students from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) on Friday, 18 September.
The second year bachelor of nursing students selected the community of Austerville as part of their community nursing module. They conducted an assessment on the problems that are prevalent in the community and planned an intervention to make a positive contribution. 
The presentation covered all the different types of drugs found specifically in the community and shared the different health effects on the body when one consumes narcotics. Learners also got to enjoy a short dramatisation about drug abuse.
Austerville Clinic’s Sr Nomagugu Mlangeni was the guest speaker of the day, who spoke on how the clinic can support the youth affected by substance abuse. “In this particular community the students identified drug abuse as one of the main problems and one in which they could make an impact on as nursing students. The information presented to the learners was at an appropriate level for them to understand, while at the same time promoting health and illness prevention,” said UKZN lecturer Silingene Ngcobo.
