WATCH: Oncologist highlights importance of regular breast examinations

OCTOBER, the month of breast cancer awareness was rounded up with an event in Merebank to highlight the importance of the issue.
Women and a handful of men took advantage of the free event organised by Women of Wonder (WOW), an NPO that strives to make impactful contributions in society.
Held at the Marigold Banquet Hall in Punjab Circle, the hosts said they could not have been more delighted with the turnout. They said everything was planned in detail including wrappers on the complimentary chocolates.
“Our objective for the event centered around breast cancer awareness. We wanted to bring light to this terrible disease in a manner that would educate and enlighten the attendees in an interactive and positive way, highlighting above all else that hope lives and cancer can be beaten. Through the feedback we received, I think it is apparent that our aims and objectives were definitely met,” said WOW member, Thelishka Pillay.
Although the venue can accommodate 500 guests, the team was careful to prioritise the health and safety of guests. The number of guests was kept to a maximum of 150 with Covid-19 protocols strictly adhered to. There was never a dull moment at the event as guests eagerly participated in the activities.

“I doubt there is a single person on our planet that has not known of someone whose life has been affected by cancer. It is one of the most prevalent diseases experienced globally, and yet our awareness of it is so minimal. Many of us have an attitude of ignorance is bliss and this can, unfortunately, be to our own detriment.”
“Therefore, this needs to be spoken about not only at events such as these but on a daily basis. I was totally in awe of the information delivered to us by the oncologist, Dr Heslop. I thought I knew a lot about cancer, but I found out that I actually knew very little,” Thelishka said.
The WOW organisation is made up of six women who share a similar vision of spreading love, care, joy and happiness. It is a non-profit group that engages in monthly initiatives to create positivity and try to make the world a better place.
The team does whatever is necessary to uplift the lives of people, animals and any living being who needs a helping hand. The women see themselves as ambassadors of kindness and compassion and believe that they can continue making a difference.
