End of the rail for Yellowwood Park cable theft robbers

A SPIKE in cable theft within Yellowwood Park (YWP) saw local crime fighters secure a number of arrests recently.

On Sunday, 31 January at about 11am a message was received via the Montclair/YWP SPF crime group stating that a group of suspects had been identified on the railway line between Starling Road bridge and Sandpiper bridge in Yellowwood Park.

ET Rapid Response, Montclair SAPS, SPF and PRASA members responded to the scene. In a joint effort, one suspect was arrested and the stolen cable was recovered. According to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) the estimated value of the cable recovered is around R250 000.

In a similar yet separate cable theft incident, five armed robbers on Friday, 22 January.

ET Rapid Response received reports of gunfire sounds coming from the vicinity of the railway about 11pm. Upon further investigation it was established that there were suspects on the railway line busy stealing cables. PRASA, Yellowwood Park SPF members, Metro Police K9, and ET Rapid Response (armed response division) attended.

Four suspects were detained by members. Reports of gun fire was reported a few minutes later and it was established that a fifth suspect was shooting at PRASA members on the railway line by Starling Road bridge. PRASA members managed to subdue the suspect and recover a firearm with live rounds.

A total five suspects was arrested and one shot. Stolen cable, implements and a vehicle used in commission of offense was recovered.
