Model trains society encourages youngsters to join

If you’re 12-years-old and above, then you’re in for a ride. The Virginia-based Durban Society of Model Engineers (DSME) calls on young people to experience a bit of history with their model trains.
Despite being less prominent on passenger railways, steam engine trains are still a thing.
Member of DSME, Bruce Lavender, 54, believes there are a lot of young people who can learn by taking up the hobby of building and collecting these miniature trains.
“I would like to see a younger generation joining the club. We welcome young members from the age of 12 and I am sure there a plenty of youngsters who would love to drive a real model steam train or learn how to build one,” he said.
The Bluff resident recently took on at the helms at the 108-year-old club and said members are still very much engulfed in the hobby.
“To be voted in as chairperson of such a longstanding organisation is quite an achievement. My plans are to expand membership and promote our hobby to people with an interest in steam trains and model engineering,” he added.
At a cost ranging between R300 000 to R400 000, this might be a very expensive hobby, but owning a model is not a membership requirement. In fact, the club has a selection of trains for members to use.
Good to know:
- The first train in South Africa was called Natalia. It was originally used to shunt goods from ships in the bay area. It now sits at Durban Station and is something to marvel at.
- While Natalia is now an artifact, the Durban Society of Model Engineers has its own fully working model.
- DSME is an NPO members’ wives assist with the club’s upkeep by helping with various tasks including gardening, taking bookings for parties or making tea (steam train drivers love a nice cup of tea).
- The club reopened its doors to the public on Sunday, 11 April. It offers rides and has a jungle gym and picnic area.
