Police warn of spike in vehicle-related crimes

BRIGHTON Beach police have issued a warning regarding property-related crimes in the area.
In a statement, spokesperson, Captain Louise le Roux said these crimes remain problematic as theft of and from motor vehicles are prevalent.
She said vehicle-related crimes occur at locations such as beaches, shopping centres, and public gatherings.
“They also occur outside business premises and in parked vehicles on verges outside residential areas. The Bluff sector is predominately affected, with these crimes occurring throughout the day.”
“By taking precautionary measures to safeguard your vehicle and the content thereof, it may minimise your chances of becoming the victim of auto theft,” she advised.
The following safety tips were compiled by Le Roux:
– When locking your vehicle feel the door handle to ensure your door is locked securely.
– When activating your car’s alarm system with your remote, face your vehicle. Ensure you hear the doors lock and see the indicator lights flash. – Wait 30 seconds before you walk off to ensure your locking device has not been deactivated.
– Do not leave valuables in plain sight, lock them in the trunk of the vehicle.
– Do not travel with valuables left on passenger seats or the floor. Handbags must also be locked in the trunk of the vehicle.
– Installing a starter interrupt switch or killer switch allows you to disable your vehicle when stolen.
– Installing a mechanical device that locks the steering wheel, column, or brakes (clubs/collars/j-bars) can minimise the chances of your vehicle being stolen.
– If possible install a vehicle theft tracking/security system.
– Copy your licence plate and vehicle information (VIN) numbers on a piece of paper and keep them with you. If your vehicle is stolen, the police will need this information to circulate without unnecessary delay.
