Boy, 16, shot dead in Wentworth drive-by

According to the police, he sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was rushed to hospital for medical attention.

RESIDENTS in Wentworth have condemned gun violence and the killing of innocent people.

This comes after another drive-by shooting claimed the life of a young boy on Lansdowne Road on Wednesday, October 6.

According to the provincial police, the incident happened at about 19:30. Spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the 16-year-old boy was allegedly shot by unknown people.

“He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was rushed to hospital for medical attention. He succumbed to his injuries upon arrival. The motive for the shooting is unknown. A case of murder is being investigated by Wentworth Saps,” she said.

Community activist, Tracey Williams, is pleading with those involved in gangs to resort to some form of peace. She said their efforts to prohibit the youth from being killed have gone unnoticed for far too long.

“Drugs and gangsterism are rife in most communities. A mother’s tears fall almost every month because of these senseless killings. Our children have no life in our community, mothers fear letting their children go outside,” she said.

Williams added that there seems to be a pattern where the community would feel a sense of peace for a while which is then overshadowed by another killing. She calls on mothers of perpetrators to do right by the community by reporting their children to authorities.

“Please stop robbing our youth of their lives. Our future generation is important to us. Mothers who allow their children to disrespect others, one day that very son will turn on you. If you know your son is doing wrong things, be the responsible one and do something about it. You have a chance to save your child and innocent children in our community that are being hurt or killed.”
