Mind conquering helps in Bluff man’s weight loss journey

Morning prayer and meditation put Jason Abrahams in the right mind frame for exercise.

“DO it on days you really don’t feel like doing it”.

This line of thinking is what motivates Bluff resident, Jason Abrahams to maintain an active lifestyle.

After a health scare about four years ago, the 43-year-old has managed to shred off weight and take control of his life.

He attributes eating unhealthy foods as the leading cause of his weight gain. At 168kg, he was his heaviest.

“At about 39-years-old, I was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with diabetes, high cholesterol, gout, and high blood pressure. It was so bad that day, the doctors could not understand how I was still standing. Since then, I was in and out of hospital up until January this year,” he said.

Having put in the work, he now weighs 125kg and admitted that the journey is far from easy. An average day is like for him entails an early morning prayer and a meditation session to encourage himself. He then exercises and readies to go to work.

“I realised I have to win in my mind first. Every morning I spend some quiet time by myself for about 30 minutes and tell myself, ‘Today, Jason you are going to win’. I just take it one day at a time.”

He also had to change his diet but oftentimes he still eats foods he likes, however, under the strict watch of portions. Even though he is making strides, he believes he still has a long way to go.

“With weight gain, it is impossible to shop at normal clothing stores. I was a six XL and could only shop at up-size stores. I am now a three XL, but would like to still come down to an XL or even a large so that I can shop as normal people do for clothes.”

His words of encouragement to someone who finds themselves where he was before are to take it one day at a time and to try and win each day.

“Win the battle in your mind first. Trust God to give you the strength. Most of all, do it on the days that you don’t really feel like doing it.”

“Don’t look at anyone else’s progress because it may discourage you. Remember that you are unique, follow your own path. Don’t rely on a partner, do it yourself. Never wait for “Monday morning” to start. Just do it,” he exclaimed.
