Bowlers from Wentworth Bowling Club enjoy clear skies for play
The men's senior singles final taking place on Sunday, October 17, at 09:00 promises to be a humdinger because neither bowler intends to take any prisoners.

LAWN bowls and the rain rarely sit on the same park bench, and the wet weather has certainly taken its toll on activities at Wentworth Bowling Club.
The Tomasina men’s casual bowls has been adversely affected by bad weather on many recent Fridays, but last Friday, October 8 dawned clear enough for the regulars to take to the green.
Robin de Gouveia, Gavin Conlon and Bryan Weldon took advantage of the day to accumulate a healthy plus 16 to scoop the day’s spoils for first place. Graham Bransby and Albert van Niekerk did enough in their game to take the second slot with Nico Heymens, Mark Russell-Bolton and Johan Nel taking home the sportsmen’s prize.
Rajen Pillay’s number was drawn from the bag to win the substantial leg of pork and Dave Carroll, Brian Smith, Ann Bonthrone and Spider Williams all pocketed a share of the two 60/40 board offerings.
Saturday, October 9 heralded another clash for champion status when MacKenzie Garland and her aunt La Raine Smith, the club’s women’s novice singles finalists, faced off in their decisive game.
Both women drew some exceptional shots, but it was La Raine who reached the goal of 21 shots with MacKenzie on 17 shots. Congratulations to both novice bowlers – their standard of play augers well for a successful lawn bowling future.
Next Saturday, October 16 will see Ben Newton and Albert van Niekerk take on Kevin and Brad Claassens in the semi-final of the men’s drawn pairs championship.
The winners will face Simon Garland and Barry Smith who have already qualified themselves for the final.
At 09:00 on Sunday, October 17, members supporting will be treated when two determined bowlers clash in the men’s senior singles final. The game promises to be a humdinger because neither bowler intends to take any prisoners.
On Tuesday, October 12, at 14:00, Kitty Schaefer and Eileen du Plessis will take to the mat in the women’s veteran singles competition. Members are reminded that October heralds a new financial year and subs are due.
