PICS: Council departments collaborate for greater good
SDB ABM facilitated the fencing off of the area which was known for attracting criminal elements.
THE city has taken back its vacant plot of land on number 191 Houghton Road in Clairwood.
Following years of neglect, attracting undesirable people and activities, the area is no longer an eyesore.
Having received numerous complaints about the vacant site, the South Durban Basin Area Based Management (SDB ABM) facilitated the fencing off of the area with various council departments.
Senior manager, Eurakha Singh, said they worked tirelessly with the departments to find a solution to end illegal activities and curb loitering. She said Roads and Storm Water, Durban Solid Waste, Architecture, Real Estate departments played a vital role in making the area safer for the community.
“Clairwood is notorious for illegal dumping, which degrades the environment and surrounding areas, so this has aggravated the situation. The complaints included illegal dumping, burning of fires to extract copper by vagrants, sleeping and loitering on this space. This has been a problem for many years and the community living around the area has been negatively impacted by the activities on a daily basis,” she said.
Work done on the plot of land includes the levelling of sand, covering and flattening the surface to allow the contractor to fence off the area.
She added that neighbours will monitor the area over the weekends to prevent dumping and other illegal activities.
