Soccer tournament promotes social cohesion

Montclair-based Prof United FC took on visitors, Ridgemont Ress FC, in this highly spirited U21 game.

A TOURNAMENT to promote social cohesion was hosted by the ANC ward 64 branch on Saturday, October 23.

Fans flocked to the Montclair Sports Grounds to show support and enjoy the live games. Branch treasurer, Jerome Cele, said their aim was to give players a chance to showcase their skills and to ward them from social ills.

“By hosting this tournament we were able to achieve two purposes, to keep the youth disciplined and healthy and fit. The fact is the game of football is about discipline.”

“By doing this, it is to also keep them away from the streets and from social ills. The games are part of our agenda to service this ward and ensure that they all have fun,” he said.

Montclair-based Prof United FC took on visitors Ridgemont Ress FC, in this highly spirited U21 game. The boys brought their all to the game, as attested by their coaches.

The local team’s assistant coach, Bheki Biyase, said the game was fair but more could have been done to improve it.

“The boys played really well. It was unfortunate that we lost 2-0 in the semifinals. We were not happy with the way the referee handled the match but it is part of the game,” he said.

Sakhile Zuma of the away team said having played the day before, his team showed signs of fatigue.

“We played well but unfortunately it wasn’t our day because we lost by 3-1. I also think the boys were tired because we played at another tournament at the Mangosuthu University of Technology on Friday, and we lost in the finals.”

“To be honest, I was expecting positive results as a coach because I know the boys are so talented but better luck next time,” he said.
