[LETTER] Traffic severely affected by M7 Umbilo overpass road neglect
Roadway neglect poses a mayor danger to motorists.
EDITOR – For 14 months the overpass off the M7 near Southway Mall has been out of commission.
The only way to reach Umbilo Road from the M7 is by means of the minor feeder road intended for traffic destined for Seaview.
Yet, that minor road has to carry traffic from the Bluff headed for the Umbilo University and Glenwood areas. Its intersection with Sarnia Road is not signalised which makes it hazardous as well as causing delays and congestion.
In June, I wrote to officials in the traffic Department deploring this situation and enquiring as to when the overpass would be sorted out. None of them responded to my inquiry. In the last week of September, I again requested a response to this unacceptable situation. Again, silence from those officials.
Traffic from the Bluff headed for the N2 ring road is also bottled up at the Titren Road intersection with the M7 at Southway Mall.
For most of the year only one lane is functional causing massive congestion and delays of up to 15 minutes at peak times. Yet no work is being done on the coned off lanes.

Again, no emailed responses were received from officials who do not even answer their phones. In my recent email to these officials I pointed out that ratepayers are irate at the deteriorating levels of service delivery.
Reflective of that decline is that when Dr Sutcliffe was Metro manager he required all officials to respond to queries within 48 hours.
Now months go by without responses from some units. Batho Pele – we serve, is supposed to be eThekwini’s motto.
