PICS: Interesting facts about the stalk-eyed fly
They are common in the Durban South area.
“THE alien drones have landed, or at least that’s what a stalk-eyed fly looks like.”
According to Warren Dick, as far as strange looking insects goes, it does not get much stranger than the stalk-eyed fly.
“Stalk-eyed flies are in the Diopsidae family known for their unusual eyes that are on stalk, like protrusions on the head. There are just over 100 different species found mostly in the tropical and subtropical climates.
“They only reach a maximum of one centimetre in length. Both adults and larvae feed on decaying plant and animal matter.
“These flies have very interesting social interactions, being quite territorial, often chasing off intruders. Males may even engage in combat to defend their territory.

Like some other animals and birds, a female stalk-eyed fly is usually quite choosy as to whom she mates with. She will only choose the male with the longest stalk eyes, thus ensuring good looking, strong offspring.”
