Brighton Beach SAPS warns of spike in violent crimes
The station noted that firearms are a criminal’s weapon of choice when committing these types of crimes.
BRIGHTON Beach SAPS reported that the use of force to rob individuals and businesses is on the rise within its precinct.
This is according to the station’s communications officer, Captain Louise le Roux, who urged residents to be vigilant.
She said the crimes are committed throughout the Bluff and Clairwood.
“The use of firearms is the preferred weapon of choice. Robbers predominantly commit these crimes with vehicles, and occasionally on foot.
“They operate as individuals and up to groups of eight. Items taken by force are mobile devices and cash. Perpetrators are predominantly men and occasionally women,” she said.
Tips to stay safe:
– Pay attention to your surroundings and avoid distractions.
– If confronted, adhere to the perpetrator’s request(s). Do not challenge them.
– Hand over the demanded items.
“Criminals will not hesitate to hurt you to get what they want,” said Le Roux.
– Avoid carrying large amounts of cash on you.
– Do not walk while texting, talking on your phone, or listening to music through headphones or earpieces.
– If you travel predominantly on foot, attach a whistle to your handbag or belt, for ease of access.
– Ensure thay you are not being followed.
– Do not walk in the street while intoxicated.
