Police discover man’s chained body in vehicle

The suspects aged between 25 and 49 appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court for murder.

THE body of a 28-year-old man with severe assault injuries was discovered by the police on Flower Road in Clairwood on Tuesday, December 28.

The man’s hands and legs were tied up with a chain which was also secured around his neck with a padlock. The police said he was assaulted by five people after allegedly being caught removing copper wires from a vehicle.

According to the provincial spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, Brighton Beach police were conducting crime prevention duties in the precinct when they received information about the man’s assault.

Upon arrival at the scene, she said, the police noticed a group of men standing along the road and questioned them about the man.

“They denied having any knowledge of such an assault in the area. Officers became suspicious and made further enquiries in the area. While investigating, they noticed a parked vehicle with chains hanging out and proceeded to inspect it. They discovered the body,” she said.

The owner of the vehicle, his son and a friend were arrested and charged with murder. Mbele said the other two suspects managed to flee the scene and are still at large.

“The arrested suspects aged between 25 and 49 appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court for murder on Friday, December 31.

“Once again the police warn communities to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. There is no place in society for vigilantism and we will not tolerate those who have no respect for the rule of law,” she added.
