THE Yellowwood Park Conservancy is appealing to residents with an interest in conservation to join their group of dedicated volunteers who have various projects in and around the community.
The conservancy has been in existence since the 1970s and according to the group’s chairperson, Gavin Hegter, it is arguably one of the oldest urban conservancies in the country, which plays a role in being the guard of protected areas.

“The role of the conservancy is to attend to conservation-related matters outside of protected areas like nature reserves. An important aspect of any conservation effort is education, so we involved learners from Yellowwood Park Primary School, which has a junior conservancy team to create more awareness and culture for preservation among the youth,” said Hegter.

With a number of projects being undertaken, including the Yellowwood Park Post Office’s indigenous garden project, the team have also joined forces with the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) where they have multiple projects running.
“We are currently engaged in an alien invasive plant project at Crow, where our members clean up the invasive plants and are also working on the rehabilitation of Crow’s wetland area. We also have an alien invasive plant project that is funded by NPC Intercement.

“We conduct various initiatives including environmental education presentations at schools, tree planting, clean-ups and the eradication of the invasion of alien plants and would like more residents, especially young people, to get involved in the conservancy,” said Hegter.
