Woman stabbed and robbed in Merebank

A teenager was arrested and will appear in court soon.

A TEENAGER who stabbed a 41-year-old woman walking home from a shopping centre in Merebank before robbing her of her belongings was apprehended by vigilant motorists passing by who witnessed the incident recently.

The traumatised woman was accosted by two young men while she was walking along Ambala Road. According to communications officer of the Wentworth SAPS, Captain Mbuso Gumede, the woman was pushed to the ground by one of the suspects.
“The other suspect then pressed her right leg to the ground and stabbed her on the right foot with a screwdriver. They then robbed her of a Samsung cellphone and R225 in cash, which she had in her pocket,” said Gumede.
Both suspects fled on foot, however, vigilant motorists gave chase and apprehended one of the suspects, while the other got away.

“The suspect who was apprehended is 17-years-old and has been positively identified by the victim. The suspect who got away had his face covered with a hat and the victim said she would not be able to identify him. The teenager was detained in Wentworth SAPS for robbery. He will be charged and appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon. The police in Wentworth would like to commend the community for their vigilance, for providing assistance to the victim, as well as for effecting a citizen arrests and recovering the property belonging to the victim,” added Gumede.
Station commander of Wentworth SAPS, Colonel Sinayo Mtshali, commended the motorists and encourage the community to work hand in hand with police to prevent crime in the Merewent area.
The victim, who did not wish to be named due to safety reasons, said she thanks and applauds the motorists who came to her rescue.
