eThekwini Municipality puts disaster teams on high alert over heavy downpours

Heavy rains are anticipated for most parts of the city over the next two days.

DURBAN mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has put all disaster management teams on high alert as heavy rains are anticipated for most parts of the city on Thursday and Friday.

Kaunda has urged residents in low-lying areas to be cautious as localised flooding is expected.

He also urged members of the public planning to travel to postpone their journeys until it is safe to travel.

Last year, torrential rains battered the province, leading to the deaths of more than 445 people and causing millions of rands worth of damages to key infrastructure and road networks.

Meanwhile, the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department said some of these weather warnings have been placed on level 9 and level 5 for various parts of the province in terms of the scale of impact and the likelihood they could spell disaster for communities living in low-lying areas.

Residents of: Big Five Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Jozini, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Maphumulo, Mkhambathini, Mthonjaneni, Mtubatuba, Ndwedwe, Richmond, uMsunduzi, uMhlabayalingane, uMhlathuze, uMlalazi and uMshwathi are urged to pay attention to the level 9 weather warning and take all the necessary precautions.

A level 5 weather warning for disruptive rain has been issued for: Abaqulusi, Alfred Duma Indaka, Alfred Duma – Ladysmith, Dannhauser, Dr N. Dlamini-Zuma-Underberg, eDumbe, eMadlangeni, Endumeni, Greater Kokstad, Impendle, Ingwe, Inkosi Langalibalele Escourt, Inkosi Langalibalele Sobabili, Mpofana Giants Castle, Mpofana – Mooi River, Msinga, Newcastle, Nkandla, Nongoma, Nquthu, Okhahlamba, Ray Nkonyeni, Ubuhlebezwe. Ulundi, Umdoni, uMngeni, UMuziwabantu, Umvoti, Umzimkhulu and Umzumbe.
