In a statement, eThekwini said these fake inspectors, who claim to be from the city’s Health Unit, are extorting money from residents and businesses.

“This follows reports received by the City from business owners who allege to have been approached by individuals claiming to be inspectors. These imposters then demand an immediate payment of R500 from the business owner. It is important to note that the City’s environmental health practitioners do not administer on-the-spot fines to businesses,” read the statement.

The City’s health officials always carry an identification badge displaying the eThekwini Municipality logo, their name, surname and office contact number. The public can contact the City’s Health Unit on 031 311 3555 to verify any individual who says they are a City inspector.
