eThekwini warns about fake meter readers

Criminals have been posing as eThekwini Municipality meter readers to gain access to residents' homes.

ETHEKWINI Municipality has issued a warning about individuals posing as meter readers who attempt to enter residents’ homes.

eThekwini spokesperson Lindiwe Khuzwayo said this follows an incident at a home where some bogus meter readers tried to gain entry but ended up running away, leaving behind the clipboard they were using in an attempt to look official.

“Ratepayers must insist on viewing identity cards of people who claim to be from the municipality. If the individual does not produce a legitimate identity card, they should not be allowed to access the property,” said Khuzwayo.

The identity card will have the picture of the individual, the municipal logo, the validity period, as well as the full name of the individual and their identity number. Residents are also encouraged to utilise online alternatives to submitting meter readings, such as email, the e-services portal or the new eThekwini app.

“Self-service methods are not just quick and convenient but will also safeguard residents against allowing any strangers to gain access into their homes. On the app and on the e-services portal, customers can update their account information, capture electricity and water meter readings, view their utility bill online and can also pay for their services using the master pass functionality,” she said.

To register on e-services, send an email to online.bills@durban.gov.za with your account number and attach a copy of your ID / company registration documents and a letter of authority if not the account holder.
