City releases student relief funds for eThekwini residents
eThekwini Municipality has urged students residing in the eThekwini Metro area to apply for financial aid from the City's financial assistance programme to assist with higher education registration costs.

FOLLOWING the release of matric results, eThekwini Municipality has invited all qualifying applicants who are South African Citizens, permanently residing in the eThekwini Municipal Area – who wish to commence or continue studying towards their first undergraduate studies in a public higher education institution in the 2024 academic year – to apply for the eThekwini Municipal Student Relief Fund.

According to the City, this financial assistance is for a full-time study programme at a public higher education institution – not private – and will be awarded based on academic performance. The financial assistance is mainly for registration, and provision may be made towards a portion of tuition fees but not accommodation, meals, books, sports, transportation and/or any other related costs.
However, the municipality has emphasised that it still solely remains the responsibility of the students to apply and get admission at higher education institutions. Students are encouraged to further apply for financial assistance from other funding sources as this funding will not cover the costs of studying.
Applications should include the following documents:
► a copy of a matric certificate if you have completed your NSC (matric) and have not studied at any higher education institution
► an academic record if you are currently studying at a higher education institution
► proof of income/salary of both parent(s) and guardians, eg, payslip/letter from employer or sworn statement or tax return statement for self-employed parents or guardian(s).
