Dekker, an actor, passionate environmentalist and botanical expert, has recently relocated from the Eastern Cape to the vibrant community of The Bluff.

Known locally as Uncle Ben, his solitary existence has taken a transformative path, as he now actively engages in nurturing the surrounding ecosystem and encouraging residents on The Bluff to join him in caring for the environment. The legendary bush-dwelling resident has, for many years, lived a reclusive life in his forest cottage.

His presence was often whispered about in hushed tones among the neighbouring communities, sparking curiosity and intrigue.

However, recent sightings of the enigmatic figure engaged in activities, such as clearing overgrown grass and pruning unruly trees, have captured the attention and admiration of local residents.

His commitment to maintaining the delicate balance of nature serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of individual responsibility in safeguarding the environment for future generations.

His love of the environment started at an early age before he completed his matric studies at Selborne College.

After matriculation from Selborne College at age 17, he was contracted for five years by the Department of Forestry. After completing two years of study at Saasveld Forestry College, he was posted to Lottering Forest Station, Tsitsikamma. While stationed there, he studied for and qualified in surveying and drift sand reclamation, leading to him travelling widely throughout South Africa.

“My brother had started his first year at university when his bursary fell through. I told my parents that I’d rather be a forester,” said Dekker.

Through his unwavering dedication and passion for nature, he has proven that even the quietest voices can spark profound change and foster a deeper connection to the world around us.

He is currently living with Dr Lydia Dekker, a mental health counsellor, and her husband, Nico.

Lydia, who is now taking care of Uncle Dekker, said they became firm friends after she was often asked by people if they were family due to their shared surname.

She said they visited Dekker at Port St John’s and since have been corresponding with him, inviting him to visit over the last 10 years.

“Ben Dekker is known for his acting roles in several Afrikaans movies and TV series during the 70s and 80s. He acted in the Wildtemmer, Die Wildtemmer se Seun, Die Vlakte Duskant Hebron, House of the Living Dead, Survivor and The Outcast. When visiting The Bluff 10 years ago, a little girl came up to him at Pick ‘n Pay and asked him if he was BFG (big friendly giant), referring to the popular children’s movie, The BFG. This was a very accurate description of him as not only is he large (1.98m tall) but he is a gentle man.

Even at the age of 83, he loves nature and does not sit still. He loves to walk, often seen walking to the shopping centres, beach and the library. He almost always carries a panga with him so he can trim bushes along the stairs and walkways to allow easy access for him and other pedestrians. This creates not only a safe walking space but also tidies up the environment. He loves to share his love for nature and his life with people.”

In a time when there was mistrust towards him, Dr Dekker informed the residents along her street, in Cairn Garoch Road, of his presence so they were not alarmed by his large presence and friendly nature.
