“I believe it’s important because we live in a democratic country, and now, my voice will finally be heard. My vote matters. Rather than just complaining, this is my chance to contribute to something better. For the first time, I will have a say in the future of this country,” Ngalula said, echoing the enthusiasm and optimism of many first-time voters.

Ngalula’s feelings are shared by many young voters, especially in eThekwini. According to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), she is one of 17 641 females, aged between 18 and 19, registered to vote in eThekwini. In Ward 64 alone, she is among the 19 973 registered voters, showcasing the potential influence of young voters in the election’s outcome.

“I’m unhappy with the current state of the country, and I firmly believe my vote can make a difference,” Ngalula added, reflecting the frustration felt by many young South Africans. Her determination to participate in the democratic process highlights the critical role of youth engagement in addressing national challenges and driving positive change.

As Election Day draws near, first-time voters like Ngalula will be instrumental in shaping the country’s future. Their participation is crucial for strengthening South Africa’s democracy and ensuring that the voices and aspirations of the younger generation are heard.
