Merebank high-speed-chase suspects expected to appear in court

The suspects were arrested for their alleged involvement in an attempted car-theft incident, possession of car-breaking implements and reckless and negligent driving.

THE four suspects, aged between 23 and 31, are expected to appear in court on charges of possessing car-breaking implements and reckless and negligent driving.

Police believe that the suspects are also connected to an attempted car theft incident that occurred on Lakhimpur Road, where they tried to hijack a white Nissan on June 22.

According to information from the police, the suspects were arrested during a high-speed chase in Merebank on June 23.

Captain Carmen Rhynes, police spokesperson for the eThekwini District, said the Metro Street Crime Unit spotted the suspects’ vehicle and attempted to stop them. However, the suspects evaded the police, prompting a pursuit.

“The suspects’ vehicle accelerated, disregarding another red light at the intersection of Himalaya Road and the M4 Northbound off-ramp, colliding with a white Hyundai Getz driven by an elderly man.

“The suspects’ vehicle struck a traffic light pole and caught fire. The suspects immediately fled in different directions. Metro police pursued and apprehended three suspects, but regrettably, one managed to escape. Subsequently, metro police acted on leads and arrested the fourth suspect in Umlazi.

“They are also suspected of attempting to steal a motor vehicle earlier that day on Lakhimpur Road, involving a white Nissan NP200,” Rhynes added.

The suspects sustained minor injuries and were detained at Wentworth SAPS. The injured driver of the white Hyundai Getz was transported to a nearby hospital.
