A SUCCESSFUL rabies vaccination drive took place in the communities of Montclair, Yellowwood Park, Woodlands and Woodhaven from July 15 to 17.

This essential initiative was spearheaded by the Department of Agriculture’s Veterinary Services Directorate to ensure the safety and health of pets and their owners by providing free rabies vaccinations.

Queen Duma, an animal health technician from the Department of Agriculture, expressed her gratitude to the community for responding positively to the call to vaccinate their pets against rabies. “The turnout was very good, thanks to all those who assisted with spreading the word and advertising,” she said.

In total, the drive successfully vaccinated 596 dogs and 24 cats. “Though we always expect more, it is encouraging to note that some pet owners, those who can afford it, take their pets to receive their rabies vaccination boosters at their respective local private vets. This really helps in fighting and curbing the rabies disease,” Duma added.

The eThekwini State Vet Office and the Department of Agriculture extend their heartfelt thanks to the community for their participation. “The community’s involvement proves the willingness and enthusiastic support in working together with the state to prevent rabies transmission and ultimately eliminate this disease,” emphasised Duma.
