Police respond to allegations of negligence in murder case
The police have defended their practices, emphasising adherence to established protocols and expressing confidence in the integrity of their investigation.
WENTWORTH Police issued a firm rebuttal to claims of mishandled evidence and procedural failures in the murder of a Merebank resident, Jodie Gopal.

This response comes amid a broader conversation about the integrity and transparency of the investigation into Gopal’s tragic death in May this year.
The Gopal family criticised the police for their alleged failure to gather crucial evidence at the crime scene – a claim that has sparked outrage from the community, as well. Gopal was shot and killed outside his home in Dinapur flats. In response to these allegations, spokesperson for Wentworth Police Station Captain Mbuso Gumede emphasised the detectives’ commitment to handling murder investigations with the utmost priority and sensitivity.

“Murder cases are inherently serious, and we ensure that they are treated with the highest level of diligence and respect,” said Gumede.
According to Gumede, Detective Sergeant Bhekinkosi Zulu, the officer assigned to the case, visited the crime scene at Dinapur flats. However, the initial absence of police at the scene was due to the urgency of medical attention for Gopal, who had been rushed to the hospital before officers arrived.
“Zulu proceeded to the hospital to continue the investigation in light of this development. The accusation that the police never attended the scene is incorrect,” said Gumede.
“He was active in gathering information and witness statements, including those from the victim’s family. We have been dedicated to treating the Gopal family with the respect and dignity they deserve during this difficult time,” Gumede added.
The police have also encouraged the family to bring forward any evidence or concerns they may have about the investigation.
“If the family feels that justice has not been adequately served or if they possess any additional evidence, they are encouraged to report these concerns directly to the station commander or the detective branch commander,” said Gumede.
He said the investigation into Gopal’s death remains ongoing, and the police are committed to ensuring that all aspects of the case are thoroughly examined.
The police have reassured the community that they are taking every possible measure to achieve justice for Gopal and his family. Gumede said that as the investigation continues, the focus remains on seeking justice for the victim while addressing and resolving any concerns raised by the family.
