Wentworth detective secures two high-profile convictions
Both murder cases happened in Wentworth in 2023.
THE Wentworth detective has recently secured convictions in two high-profile cases from May and November 2023. In both cases, Detective Sergeant Sibonelo Nzama, stationed at the Wentworth police station, was assigned to investigate.
The first case involves an Uber driver who was subjected to a harrowing robbery at knifepoint in Austerville on November 19, 2023.

The driver was responding to a request he received to pick up a passenger from a location on Burgers Road in Wentworth. According to the information received from the Wentworth police, upon arrival, two passengers, a man and woman entered the vehicle. The female suspect requested a stop to pick up her “sister,” at which point the other suspect brandished a knife and demanded cash from the driver.
The female suspect seized the driver’s Samsung cellphone during the robbery before both suspects fled the scene.

Police spokesperson for Wentworth police station Captain Mbuso Gumede said the matter was reported to the Wentworth police station for further investigation.
“Detective Sergeant Nzama’s quick response led to the arrest of the female suspect on the same day. She was found in possession of the stolen cellphones and was subsequently charged.
“The male suspect is still at large. Following a series of court appearances, the female suspect was convicted of robbery with aggravating circumstances on June 25, and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on June 26, at the Durban Regional Court. The victim expressed gratitude for the swift resolution and recovery of their property,” said Gumede.

In a separate case, the murder accused was sentenced to 15 years in prison at the Durban Magistrate’s court recently. The accused was arrested after he shot and killed the victim outside his flat on May 15, 2023.
The victim, who was with his girlfriend and two babies, was struck by a bullet fired from outside the flat.
“The victim tried to confront the shooters, who later returned aggressively, resulting in the fatal shooting.
“The suspect turned himself in on May 21, 2023, after Detective Sergeant Nzama had been diligently pursuing leads. The accused, with a history of prior convictions, faced charges of murder. Despite opposition to bail, the accused remained in custody throughout the proceedings.
Station Commander Colonel Sinayo Mtshali and management have commended Nzama for his unwavering commitment and dedication to ensuring justice in this case.
“The recent convictions serve as a stern warning to those contemplating violent crime, demonstrating the police’s resolve to apprehend and prosecute offenders effectively.
“These cases underscore the relentless efforts of Wentworth police in combating crime and delivering justice to the community. Detective Sergeant Nzama’s exemplary work has been pivotal in achieving these successful outcomes, reflecting the high standards of dedication and professionalism within the department,” Gumede added.
