The event, spearheaded by Emeldah Mkhulisi, education officer from Durban Solid Waste, was held in honour of National Clean-Up Month and Arbor Day. It was aimed to instil a sense of environmental responsibility and effective waste management practices in the youth.

Mkhulisi emphasised the event’s primary goal: to educate the community about effective waste management and encourage waste minimisation. The programme featured a variety of educational activities designed to enhance environmental awareness. Learners exhibited their creativity through art projects made from waste materials under the theme, ‘Turning Waste into Art’. This initiative showcased the value of repurposing discarded items and highlighted the concept of upcycling in a fun and engaging way.

Yellowwood Park Primary School learner Ayabonga Mbongwa was awarded a spot prize for answering questions correctly.

A key feature of the event was the introduction of a recycling initiative in the participating schools. Each school was provided with recycling bins and bulk bags, marking the beginning of their commitment to waste reduction and responsible disposal. This practical measure is intended to cultivate a recycling culture within the schools and reinforce the environmental lessons learned.

The event also included a unique shark dissection demonstration, offering learners an intriguing look into marine biology and the impact of waste on ocean ecosystems. Various departments contributed by setting up informative displays and engaging learners in important environmental discussions.

Babalo Mpaka from the KZN Sharks Board did a live shark dissection for the learners to see the impact of littering into the ocean.

In celebration of Arbor Day, trees were distributed to the schools, with each institution pledging to plant and care for them as part of their conservation efforts.

The event was a great success, with enthusiastic participation from all ten schools. Learners actively engaged in discussions, proudly displayed their artwork and answered questions about their new environmental insights.

The South Durban Basin Area-Based Management’s environmental talk successfully inspired and empowered the young participants, fostering a deeper commitment to community preservation and environmental stewardship.
