Captain Cheryl Pillay, Montclair Police Station spokesperson, said the investigation was done swiftly and the detectives worked around the clock to bring the suspect into custody. “The accused is expected to appear at the Wentworth Magistrate’s Court on October 6 on charges of murder,” she said.

The body of 20-year-old Amanda Phungula was discovered on October 2 on Coedmore Road before the bridge by a security guard who was patrolling the area. “The woman’s body was discovered with a single stab wound by her right eye,” she said.

Colonel Trevor Small, Montclair Police Station Commander, said crimes committed against women and children remain a serious concern, and he praised the speed of response by the police in arresting the suspect. “This case will be prioritised and investigating intensified to ensure that the perpetrator faces the full might of the law,” he said.

The police, in the same breath, are urging women to exercise caution when walking in isolated areas. “We advise women not to walk with strangers in areas that leave them vulnerable to attack. Rather, ensure your safety and walk with other people in well-lit areas,” he said.

If you notice any suspicious persons or vehicles, contact the Montclair Police on 031 462 6219 or police emergency services on 10111.
