Wentworth woman arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm

The firearm and ammunition were found hidden in a cooler box at the women’s house at the Woodville and Hime Street flats in Wentworth.

A WOMAN from Wentworth was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Sunday (October 20). The suspect was arrested during the police sting operation conducted at the Woodville and Hime Street flats in Wentworth.

Police spokesperson in Wentworth Captain Mbuso Gumede said the members of Vispol Relief ‘B’ received information about a possible retaliation shooting that was going to take place at the flats.

“Police received information from informants that the suspect was in possession of a firearm. The members of the Wentworth Vispol, Umlazi K9, ET Rapid Response and Ying Yang Security proceeded to the flat to investigate further.

“Upon arrival, the officers searched the premises. A 9mm pistol was recovered. The firearms’ serial number had been filed off. The police also recovered one magazine with 18 live rounds of ammunition. All these items were found stashed in a cooler box. The suspect was placed under arrest and then taken to Wentworth Police Station. She has been charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said Gumede.

The suspect is expected to appear at the Wentworth Magistrate’s Court soon.
