E-hailing driver survives botched hijacking in Merebank

The driver was responding to a request to pick up passengers in Merebank when the suspects tried to hijack him.

AN  E-hailing driver who was responding to a request to pick up passengers in Merebank escaped injury when his two armed passengers tried to rob him on Wednesday (November 13).

The two suspects who tried to hijack an e-hailing driver on the M4 near Merebank are still on the loose. According to the spokesperson for PT Alarms Dhevan Govindasamy, the driver was travelling on the M4 towards Merebank to pick up passengers.

“ A vigilant PT Alarms Tactical unit that was on patrol in the Merebank area were quick to spot an attempted hijacking in progress and swiftly intervened.

“Upon seeing the PT Alarms officers, the suspects fled the scene. The suspects made a hasty retreat into the Wentworth flats area. They failed to take the vehicle, but managed to grab the driver’s cellphone.

“It was established that the suspects had requested the vehicle which they had decided to hijack. Fortunately, nobody was harmed. A knife was recovered by the Tactical unit. The driver was taken to Wentworth Police Station and the weapon was handed over to the authorities. The driver was traumatised and declined to open a case,” said Govindasamy.

Attempts to get a comment from the spokesperson for Wentworth Police Station, Captain Mbuso Gumede were unsuccessful.
