Boy (14) drowns in swimming pool in Merebank

The victim got into difficulty while swimming with friends at a public pool in Merebank where two lifeguards are stationed.

A BOY (14) drowned while swimming with friends at the Merewent Pool yesterday afternoon (November 20).

Spokesperson for PT Alarms Dhevan Govindasamy said the public pool has two lifeguards who manage and oversee the pool. He said when he arrived at the scene the two lifeguards were in attendance.

“The body of the boy was lying on the side of the pool. The life guards had managed to retrieve his body from the water. Upon interviewing the children it came to light the youngsters who were using the pool were enjoying themselves with some possibly behaving in a typical boisterous and rough manner.

He said the victim got into difficulty in the area where water depth changes from shallow to deep.

“There are two lifeguards at the pool. With a huge crowd of about 150 people using the pool at the same time, it becomes a mammoth task for these guards.

“As a community we all need to educate and warn our children as to proper behavior when using the public pool,” said Govindasamy. He urged parents to educate their children about appropriate behaviour when swimming in the public pool.

He added, “Younger children should be accompanied by adults when using a public facility such as the pool.”
