New rehabilitation centre at Clairwood Hospital opened
The Road Accident Fund has continued its efforts to assist victims of car crashes to get rehabilitated with a new ward at Clairwood Hospital.
IN an attempt to boost the rehabilitation and reintegration of road accident survivors back into their communities, the Road Accident Fund (RAF) officially opened a newly renovated rehabilitation ward at Clairwood Hospital in Durban on November 19. The move demonstrates the RAF’s commitment to the upgrading of public healthcare facilities in South Africa’s accident hotspots.

The refurbishment is in line with the RAF’s corporate social responsibility objectives, focusing on trauma care for road crash victims in their journey of recovery. The improved ward offers state-of-the-art facilities for physical rehabilitation, aimed at helping survivors regain independence and achieve better health outcomes.
Collins Letsoalo, RAF CEO, said, “Our aim is to deliver results that improve the lives of South Africans in line with the Fund’s mandate. The RAF is strategically contributing to the wellness of road accident survivors and the reintegration of persons with disabilities back into society.”
The upgrading of Clairwood Hospital was done in partnership with the Durban-based Rehabilitate Institute of Africa, a non-governmental organisation that boasts experience in rehabilitation matters across the continent.
The new ward forms part of a national attempt by the RAF to solve problems that have plagued road accident claimants. The wards are designed to streamline trauma care and alleviate financial and medical pressure from the RAF.
Letsoalo said, “While we acknowledge the challenges faced by claimants after an accident, road crash prevention efforts remain a priority as they contribute towards the reduction of accidents.”
The unveiling ceremony was attended by key stakeholders from the healthcare sector, government officials, and representatives from the RAF and the Rehabilitate Institute of Africa.
