Engen launches solar power system at Merebank school
Engen unveiled its new state-of-the-art solar power system at one of its Engen Maths and Science Schools in Merebank.
IN a bid to improve sustainability and educational empowerment, Engen has launched a state-of-the-art solar power system at its Engen Maths and Science School (EMSS), situated at Ganges Secondary School in South Durban. This unique initiative brings together renewable energy and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education under one roof.

The newly installed 15kW portable solar containers and UPS units were officially unveiled in a celebratory event at Ganges Secondary School recently. The system uses clean, renewable energy to ensure that the school gets uninterrupted power, reducing reliance on conventional electricity sources. This will result in a reduction of electricity costs and carbon emissions, while savings are reinvested into future sustainability projects. The solar installation is the first step in Engen’s plan to equip all 10 EMSS centres across the country with similar renewable energy systems.
Olwethu Mdabula, Engen’s CSI manager, highlighted the dual impact of the project.
“This project is a remarkable blend of sustainability and STEM education. It not only reduces our environmental footprint, but also serves as an invaluable teaching resource. By integrating renewable energy into the curriculum, we aim to inspire students to become the next generation of engineers, scientists, and environmental leaders,” said Mdabula.
Kevin Singh, Head of Engen Business and Energy Solutions, said the system was adaptable. “These 15kW portable solar containers and UPS units provide uninterrupted energy and are compact, efficient, and ideal for schools. They also support STEM-based initiatives like robotics and coding, which are essential to prepare learners for a technology-driven future,” he said.
The programme which was established in 1987, provides free tuition in mathematics, science and English to more than 1 500 learners annually. For 2023, the programme achieved 97% matric pass and achieved a 77% bachelor pass. Furthermore, 99 learners in the 2023 group gained full bursaries towards their tertiary education in 2024.
