FOR a safe and enjoyable festive season beachgoers and bathers in eThekwini are advised to always check the water quality of the beaches they intend to visit. Residents and tourists are encouraged to check through the eThekwini Municipality’s website, by following this step-by-step process.

Process:

Step 1: Go to the eThekwini Municipality website  

• Access the municipality’s website at www.durban.gov.za
• Alternatively, you can go to beachwater.durban.gov.za and be directed to the map immediately.

Step 2: Click the ‘Beach Status’ tab 

• On the homepage, find and click on the tab labelled ‘Beach Status’. This will take you to a dedicated page featuring a detailed report of eThekwini’s beaches.

Step 3: Interpret the water quality indicators

This report shows the most recent status of every beach in a colour-coded style to inform the users about the quality of the water.

• Red indicates poor water quality.
• Green indicates acceptable water quality.
• Blue indicates ideal water quality.

The municipality is encouraging beachgoers and bathers to check on its conditions to minimise the risk of someone sustaining health-related illnesses from polluted water.
