Montclair residents urged to report trucks blocking residential roads

Residents of Halifax Road in Woodlands have raised safety concerns regarding trucks that park in residential areas.

METRO police have urged Montclair residents to report trucks parked in their residential areas. In recent weeks, the Woodlands area has seen logistics trucks parked opposite residential properties.

This has caused a public stir as many residents have complained about the presence of the heavy trucks while the residential roads are being used by families and children. The trucks were parked on Halifax Road in Woodlands.

Metro police spokesperson, Colonel Boysie Zungu, said municipal bylaws prohibit trucks from parking in residential areas. He also urged the community to report to the nearest Metro police station.

“In residential areas trucks are prosecuted for causing obstruction, and or in contravention of road signages. The legislation does not permit trucks to park overnight in residential areas, between the hours of 19:00 to 05:00,” said Zungu.

The SUN had received complaints from residents who claim that authorities were not proactive in addressing their concerns regarding trucks parking in residential areas.

“If a complaint is laid at Clairwood station and the member of public was referred to Chatsworth station, this is subject to investigation; the complainant is requested and encouraged to open a formal complaint with the south region,” Zungu added.

“All complaints are attended to, either through the communication centre, email, or members of public presenting themselves at respective stations with their complaints, and in some instances an affidavit would be required. This is ongoing enforcement,” Zungu added.

A resident Vera Emslie, told the SUN, “Drivers are parking across the road that is being used by families and children. They park there the whole day and sometimes two consecutive days. This raises concerns because there are no public toilets nearby that they can use.

“However, I have noticed that the trucks have stopped coming into our road after we complained to the newspaper.”

How to report:

To report heavy trucks parking in residential areas, call the communication centre on 031 361 0000.

According to eThekwini Municipality’s bylaws heavy trucks are prohibited from travelling on residential roads.
