The day began with a special assembly where learners, staff and distinguished guests reflected on the school’s journey since its founding in 1965. Deputy principal Ramesh Singh described the occasion as truly memorable, highlighting a cake-cutting ceremony, an aerial photo of learners forming the number 60 on the school field and special treats including cupcakes and a chocolate slab for each learner.

Adding star power to the event were celebrated alumni, including renowned South African actress Luyanda Zwane, known for her lead role as Sibongile Dlamini in the popular telenovela Sibongile and the Dlaminis. Joining her was Jovaan “The Quick Fixx” Moonsamy, a DJ for Lotus FM and a familiar face in Durban’s club scene. Both alumni reminisced about their school days and expressed gratitude for the impact St Mary’s had on their lives.

“This anniversary is a testament to the dedication of our staff, the enthusiasm of our learners, and the unwavering support of our community,” Singh said.

Principal Roshan Ramdheen shared his excitement for the school to have reached this milestone. “This 60th anniversary is a celebration of our legacy, our learners and the bright future we continue to build together. We are proud of what we have achieved and excited for the opportunities that lie ahead,” said Ramdheen.

Singh said as St Mary’s Primary School journeys into the future, it remains committed to fostering a nurturing environment in which learners can thrive academically, socially and emotionally.
